Pleasant Mangum of Granville Co., N. C.

Pleasant Mangum was born 1777 in North Carolina. We have no direct evidence of who his parents were. He was a loner and did not live near any of the other Mangum families in the area. By a process of elimination we believe we have identified a likely candidate for his father. We believe that Howell Mangum, a Revolutionary soldier, was Pleasant's father. Howell had one son born before he went to war and we believe that son was Pleasant. DNA evidence seems to confirm that Pleasant was Howell's son. Both Pleasant & one of Howell's descendents from another son have a fairly uncommon DNA mutation, infrequently seen in the other descendents of John Mangum the immigrant.

After the war Howell had several more children and about 1804 moved his family to Georgia. Pleasant stayed behind and married Ann Lloyd in Granville Co., N. C. in 1805. Pleasant and Ann had several children including Archibald Mangum who married Martha Parham. Two of their sons took their mother's maiden name, Parham, and exiled themselves to Arkansas after a barn dance incident in North Carolina.
