Howell Mangum was a son of Samuel Mangum of the Virginia to North Carolina migration in 1748. He apparently inherited all of Samuel's property when he died. He was one of six children mentioned when Samuel's estate was filed although no names were given.
Howell was in the Revolutionary War as a Patriot from North Carolina. We presently believe that the one son born to Howell before he went to war was Pleasant Mangum, the ancestor of the present writer. About 1804 Howell sold his N. C. land and took his family, all except Pleasant Mangum, to Georgia. They settled in Franklin Co., Ga.
