LAST MODIFIED SEPTEMBER 2016

We now have 87 members in the Mangum DNA surname group of which 73 of them participate in the ‘Mangum” “Y” chromosome study. We also have found in other projects the results from 7 individuals (Robertson, Chambless, Griffin, Crow & Duke) who are not members of our Mangum surname group but have some relationship to our Mangum group participants. Their results are not included here, but have been used to evaluate Mangum relationships and broken lineages relationships. The ‘MANGUM MODAL’ table below shows the supposed John Mangum marker values that we believe he passed down to all his descendants. There are 111 markers from Family Tree DNA (FTDNA), although some individuals had only 12 markers tested. The MAIN MANGUM LINE (MML) are those individuals who we believed actually descended from John Mangum. They all have identical or almost identical marker values to the modal. The MANGUM MUTATIONS table (also below) shows all the individuals in the MML along with their few mutations from the modal. Only those markers are shown for which one or more individuals had a mutation away from the modal. For the markers not listed in this chart, all the MML individuals had values identical to the modal values. For those markers shown in the chart, the mutations are the ones in Red Bold type.

It is not necessary to understand everything about the tables, including just what the numbers actually refer to, in order to understand the results. If you wish to know, please visit the Family Tree DNA website and read some of their tutorials. In general, the numbers represent the numbers of repeated identical molecular groups (Short Tandem Repeats "STRs") in each identified marker on the "Y" chromosome. In other words, a 15 in a particular marker means the DNA of the individual tested contains 15 identical molecular groups, one after the other, at that particular site. Other individuals, particularly unrelated individuals, may have different numbers, 14, 16 or 17, etc. at that particular site.

The important information is whether the marker values (numbers) for each person matches the marker values of other participants in the database, and how closely they match. Note the Haplogroup column in the chart. In essence, Haplogroups are a pedigree chart of the clans of humanity. A Haplogroup can be thought of as a clan of individuals related by a series of mutations and in this case, mutations in the Y-chromosome called SNPs. The last mutation (SNP) in the series defines the Haplogroup and all members have that last mutation (Terminal SNP) as well as all the previous SNPs in the series. We Mangums are all members of the R-L1308 Haplogroup, but also members of the older Z253 Haplogroup, and the older still R-L21 Haplogroup. These older Haplogroups are listed for some members because their level of testing did not include the R-L1308 SNP.

THE MANGUM MODAL MARKERS

(Previously called the Standard Mangum Markers. These marker values are those we believe that were handed down to us from John Mangum the immigrant. See Mangum-Mangham-Mangrum Journal 60, Page 17 “General Information” for more information on how we determined the Mangum Modal or Standard Mangum Markers.)

Notes:

1. Most of the marker values above without leading letters (390, 393, etc) have the prefix DYS where ‘D’=DNA, ‘Y’=Y-chromosome and ‘S’=(unique) segment. The three marker values with amber shading are DYFs, where the ‘F’ is a segment that has multiple copies on the Y chromosome.

2. The mutation rate for the 1-36 markers shows the average chance of a single mutation per 1,000 generations.

3. The markers in red are fast mutating markers.

4. The 389A marker in yellow above is derived from marker 389-1 & 389-2 for use in a rare case where the value of 389-2 alone would appear to show two mutations where only one occurred.

5. The marker values highlighted in green in the last panel are tentative. We don’t yet have enough information to decide if these are Mangum Modal values.

THE MANGUM MUTATIONS

(Only the markers where we have found mutations from the Mangum modal [Listed above] are shown. These are only the FTDNA markers and do not include markers from the new YFull analysis presented elsewhere.)

1.     The terminal SNP for John Mangum and ‘ALL’ his male descendants is R-L1308. R-M269, R-L21 and R-Z253 are all older parent SNPs to the more recent R-L1308 SNP and are all part of each participant’s genome. These older SNPs are listed because the participant’s level of testing did not probe any deeper into his DNA.

2.     Marker values in red are mutations from the Mangum Modal.

3.     ** CDYa & CDYb are believed to be extremely fast mutating markers.
