DNA testing is done on the male
“Y” chromosome, which is passed from father to
son unchanged, except for occasional mutations. In STR 'Recent Ancestry' testing, a mutation occurs about every 500 generations in any
one marker. That means a probable mutation in every 13 or 14 generations with
37 markers. Testing the Y chromosome will provide you with a genetic
fingerprint consisting of 37, 67, 111 or even more markers. By
comparing this fingerprint to others with your surname, you can
determine if you are related, and statistically how closely you are
related. The newer 'Deep Ancestry' testing project determines our ancient Mangum lineage's place in the Human Family Tree using SNP mutations, which are very rare in any one marker.
The objectives of any Surname Project can vary but in general the
projects are used to:
Identify others who are related
Prove or disprove theories regarding ancestors
Solve brick walls in your research
Determine a location for further research
Validate existing research
Establish the relationship between the various Mangum related surnames in the U.S.
Establish the relationship between the U.S. surnames and similar surnames in England and Ireland.
Establish the Mangum lineage's place in the 'Y' chromosome Human Family Tree.
I have established a surname project at the FAMILY TREE DNA called “Mangum Related”, with me (Lynn Parham) as one of the administrators. E-mail me at the address at bottom of this page to sign up for this project and have your DNA tested! NOTE: Joining the project will initially only allow you to purchase a DNA test kit at the group discount rates. After you have your DNA test results, the results page created for you by FAMILY TREE DNA will allow you to access a wealth of DNA information relating to your ancestors and their origin.

NOTE:
1.
Test is for "MALES ONLY". Females should get a male family member such
as father, brother, uncle (with Mangum or Mangum related surname) to
take the test.
2. Test is for direct "Mangum & Related Surnames" only unless a
genetic link to the Mangums is suspected. It is not the surname but the
genes that count.
3. We ask that individual being tested assume the cost of test. At this writing, the
cost for the 37 marker test is around $150, depending on
special promotions by FTDNA. The original 12 and 25 marker tests are not now being advertised. There are also the 67 and 111 marker tests at additional cost.
4. These STR tests cannot reveal any medical information, genetic defects, etc. It
only shows probable genetic relationships to other individuals who have
taken the test. Some of the higher level DNA testing results (such as Big Y and mtDNA Full Sequence) can contain medical information, but access is restricted and it is not used by Family Tree DNA for non-genealogy purposes.
You should do the STR test before going to the higher level SNP testing. With the STR tests, the first thing you must do is to decide whether to test for 37 markers or go with the higher resolution tests. The 37 marker test has been very informative for most participants. It is at this level that we begin to see significant differences in individual Mangum lines. The 67 & 111 marker test has not yet given us as much information as the 37 marker test, but we only have a few participants for those tests, and as more test for these upper markers are performed, we expect to obtain very useful information from them also.
Tests can usually be upgraded to higher markers without submitting another sample. It costs more to do a basic test, then later upgrade to more markers, than it does to go direct to the higher markers initially.
We have found lineages of Mangums who are not related to the main line of Mangums. In spite of these unrelated lineages, most Mangums and related surnames in the U.S. are descended from our immigrant ancestor whom we believe is John Mangum of 1692 Virginia. We presently believe that all these Mangum lines not DNA related to the descendents of John Mangum are broken lineages, that is, lines where persons unrelated genetically to the Mangums were raised with Mangum surname. If you are of an English, Irish, etc. lineage whose surname is spelled similarly to Mangum (Manningham, Mangle, Malham, Mengham, Mingham, Maugham, etc), we would very much like to have you join our project and have your DNA tested.
