Joseph Mangum of Bute/Warren County, N. C. was likely son of Samuel Mangum of the Va. to N. C. migration. He was about 1747-52 and was quite active in the political life of the county. He owned only 319 acres of land, large by today's standards but small by frontier standards. The family eventually disappeared from Warren County in 1822. One probable son of Joseph's, James Mangum, appears in Iredell County, N. C. in the early years of the century. He spelled his surname 'Mangrum'. The family moved on to Williamson Co., Tennessee and many of the Tennessee Mangrums descend from this family.
